Central Air Problems and Signs of Failure

At the height of summer, central air problems can make your home or office uncomfortable and unbearable. And while sticking to your annual tune-ups and maintenance can help extend the life of your system, central air problems are sometimes inevitable.

Here are five signs of central air problems that could mean your system needs replacing or repairs.

Central Air Problems and Signs of Failure

#1: Your central air system is old
Even with top-of-the-line systems, nothing ever lasts forever. According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average unit has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Now, of course, there are factors that affect this, but it’s a good general guideline to match against your system. If your system falls within this range or beyond and appears to be losing efficiency, it may be time to schedule an AC repair or consider the installation of a replacement unit.

#2: Your energy costs are rising
Rising energy costs aren’t always to blame when your energy bill arrives in your mailbox. Central air problems could be causing your expenses to spike. As your central air system ages, it will slowly lose its efficiency over time. This means your unit will work harder to keep things cool, contributing to more energy output and more dollars spent.

#3: It’s not keeping temperatures down
Is it hot in here or what? If your current system struggles to keep the temperatures down indoors while temps are on the rise outside, it could be a sign of fault or that your system can’t handle the energy needed to keep things cool. It could also be a sign that your unit is in need of a little TLC or routine maintenance. This may help mitigate its efficiency and regulation of temperature indoors. If not, it may be another sign your system is on the way out.

#4: Your system is loud
Have you noticed your cooling system is louder than normal? If you hear grinding, squeaking, or unusual sounds coming from your unit, this isn’t a typical sign of aging. Most systems operate with noise levels that are barely detectable. So, if you happen to hear sounds that are anything by normal, your central air may need some repairs.

#5: You notice unusual smells
Like hearing strange sounds, noticing a foul smell coming from your system is not something to overlook. A system at fault may emit a smoky or burning smell, indicating that something isn’t right with the unit. If you happen to notice this, it requires immediate attention.
