Child Proof Outlets

Childproof outlets are an important part of keeping our little ones safe. Every year, more than 2,400 children are treated for electrical shocks and burns—a figure far too high to ignore. And the truth is, it’s pretty simple and inexpensive to childproof outlets around your home.

Here’s how you can childproof outlets with ease.

Different Kinds of Childproof Outlets

Plugs or Caps

One of the most common ways to childproof outlets around your home is to use plugs or caps. These are small cap-like covers that are inserted directly into outlets as if you were plugging in a device. They’re an inexpensive option and are good for traveling, however, they don’t come without their drawbacks.

Oftentimes, these caps are forgotten to be replaced after an outlet is finished being used, defeating the purpose of purchasing them and leaving your outlet unguarded. They can also pose as a choking hazard if a child removes a cap from an outlet and puts it into their mouth. If you live in an older home with outdated outlets, sometimes, these caps won’t fit snugly. They may become loose or can be easily pulled at by a curious child.

Sliding Outlet Covers

These protective covers offer a little more security than plugs or caps. Acting as a self-closing cover, this childproofing tactic automatically guards itself after install. Sliding outlet covers are simply installed by replacing your current covers with the sliding cover. All you’ll need is a screwdriver. When a device is unplugged from this guard, the outlet instantly closes by the sliding cover. This feature eliminates the choking hazard associated with plugs or caps and can be a more permanent solution for parents.

Box Covers

For electronics and devices that are always plugged in, box outlet covers are a great way to childproof outlets in your home. A protective case covers the plug and the outlet to deter children from playing with plugs. These covers come in a variety of sizes to accommodate adapters and plugs of all sizes, and they can be easily removed when it’s time to take them off.

No matter the method you choose, there are simple, affordable ways to childproof outlets at home. You may need to use more than one method to safely proof your space, depending on the types of plugs and devices you have in use.
