Home lighting tips for every room in your home.

Looking for the perfect home lighting tips for every room in your home? Getting the right light takes careful planning and placement to achieve the look and feel you want at home. If you read our blog last month on the impact of lighting on productivity and emotion, you already know that the right light can transform the ambiance of a room and change how you feel.

Here are our home lighting tips to transform your home into something more than ordinary.

Types of lighting

Before we dive into our home lighting tips for every room in your home, let’s first take a look at the different types of lighting.

Ambient: ambient lighting is used to canvas an area and provide overall light in a room. Fixtures on ceiling fans, chandeliers, wall sconces, recessed, and track lighting all fall under ambient light. A central source of light is essential for lighting every room in your home and acts as a foundation to layer other types of light.

Task: task lighting is used to target certain spaces in a room for different functions like reading, meal prep, or handiwork. Fixtures like table lamps and pendants focus light and help reduce eye strain when completing a task.

Accent: accent lighting is used to highlight an area in a room, specifically, art and décor like paintings, sculptures, plants, and other decorative items. Accent lighting is a great way to layer light in a space by pulling the eye to a specific location in the room.

Room by room

Kitchen: you spend a lot of time in your kitchen mincing vegetables, reading recipes, and cooking for the family, so you want this room to be filled with light. And while natural light may be limited in this space, simulating daylight or brightening the room can be achieved with proper placement of light bulbs between 3,000 and 4,500 kelvins. Opt for recessed and under cabinet lighting—and if you have an island, consider pendant lighting to spotlight where you’ll do most of your meal prep.

Dining room: dining should be leisurely—and when you’re at the table with family or friends, you should feel relaxed, so you’ll want to opt for warm lighting. Choose bulbs between 2,200 and 3,000 kelvins for a warmer, more relaxed feel, and consider pendant lighting or a hanging fixture or chandelier to center over the table to provide ambient light. Depending on the size of the room, you may also consider accent lighting to highlight certain pieces or décor.

Living room: another space you spend lots of time, this room is all about unwinding. Your living room is for leisure, so, cool, bright lights aren’t necessarily ideal for relaxing. Use a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting with bulbs between 2,000 and 3,000 kelvins for a warm and cozy feel. Place task lights like table lamps in areas that light up the room so you can switch between using ambient light and turning the lights down low for a little R&R.

Bathroom: let’s face it—when we step into our bathrooms, we’re all on display. And because we love to get up-close and personal in the mirror when we’re getting ready in the morning, we want to see as much of ourselves as we can before the world outside has a chance. Most bathrooms are equipped with an ambient light, but that’s not enough so see what we need in the mirror. Consider installing a series of bulbs between 3,000 and 5,000 kelvins over your mirror so you can see all of you.

Bedroom: ahhh—time to unwind! Your bedroom should always be a place for peace. And to get that, aside from décor and a plush, comfy bed, the right lighting is key. Ambient light may be good for searching for that M&M that rolled under the nightstand when you’re eating in bed (don’t we all do that?), but it’s not exactly relaxing. Use lamps on either nightstand and accent lighting to diffuse and disperse light around the room so there’s enough darkness to pacify the stress of everyday life. Opt for warm light with bulbs between 2,700 and 3,000 kelvins.
