How To Prepare Your Water Heater For Colder Months

AUTHOR:

When it comes to the end of summer, you’re probably ready to ditch your air conditioning for open windows and fresh air. We all know that doesn’t last long and before you know it, you’ll be switching on the heat to keep yourself warm.

Your heater isn’t the only important thing for comfort during cold weather though. Fall and winter also require your hot water heater to work harder to keep your showers warm and to even get hot water in your sink.

Here are a few things to help prepare your water heater for the cold weather and to keep you from hot water heater repairs in South Jersey

Check The Temperature and Pressure

As the name suggests, the temperature you set plays a vital role in keeping your water heater running efficiently. If you have your water heater set at too high a temperature and water pressure, it can cause mechanical issues that can lead to repairs. These problems can be even worse in cold weather, when the system will need to work harder to heat your water.

You should check to make sure your temperature is set to 120 degrees and the water pressure should be between 40 and 80 psi.

Clean The Tank

As your water heater ages, sediment accumulates in the tank. This sediment can reduce the efficiency of your system, as well as making your water hard and unhealthy. For this reason, you should clean your tank regularly and the fall is the perfect time due to the mild temperatures.

While you can do this yourself, if you are not comfortable using a hose to empty and clean the tank, you can always call a South Jersey plumber to do it.

Insulate The Tank

One of the best ways to increase the efficiency of your hot water heater is to insulate the tank. This will make it easier for the system to heat your water. You can find foil blankets at most hardware stores, but again, this can also be handled by a South Jersey plumber if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself.

Schedule An Inspection

No matter how new your system is, you should have your hot water heater inspected regularly to ensure it is working properly. While hot water is important all year long, it is especially important in the colder months. So the fall is the perfect time to schedule an inspection.
