When you look around your home, few things stand out in terms of clutter: maybe a stack of laundry or an unkempt counter top of old bills, car keys, and yesterday’s paper. But the kind of clutter we turn our attention to are unsightly cords that seem to grow like weeds around the house. If you’re looking to hide cords in your home, there are things you can do to tuck them out of sight. But to hide cords safely with aesthetic appeal is your goal. Ultimately, you want to hide cords in your home free of hazard so each room in the house can stand alone and feel clean and organized.
Here are some tips on how to hide cords that seem to have a mind of their own.
- Run cables behind walls
One major source of unsightly cords is the briar patch around and behind your TV or entertainments system. And to safely hide these cables, you’ll need a couple tools and a decent eye for this DIY. Using a drywall saw, carefully cut a hole behind the television mounted on your wall and another hole near the outlet where your TV is plugged. We recommend unplugging all devices while making this change. Be sure the space you cut is hollow and no wall studs stand in the way. Install cable plates, and fish the cords through one end and out the other.

- Hide and relocate your power strip
Another way to hide cords in your home is targeting those power strips and surge protectors. We seem to plug everything but the kitchen sink into these devices, and they can quickly overwhelm a space if not properly handled. Check your power strip or surge protector for holes on the back that can be hung on the wall with nails or screws, or purchase a wall-mounted surge protector that can plug directly into an outlet so it’s not taking over the floor in your home office or family room.
- Create a docking station
If you have some extra space in your home, creating a docking station for all of your devices to charge is a wonderful way to keep chargers and cords off the floor and all in one place. With some careful crafting, you can devote a drawer or a surface in your home to charging your phone, tablet, and other small devices. You can even use a file organizer to place your devices in with the cords running out the back and out of sight.
- Concealing your router and cable box
Another source of unsightly cords in home is often where we keep our router and cable box. These devices not only create clutter with the multiple cords they employ, but they can take up a lot of space. Consider stashing them away in a sideboard or cabinet and drilling a hole in the back so the cords have a place to go without anyone ever seeing.
