But what does it really mean? And more pressing, how does it save you money?

The Energy Star seal is a government-backed marker granted to appliances meeting the energy efficiency requirements set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help consumers save money on energy bills without forfeiting performance, features, or comfort.
Companies seeking the Energy Star seal of approval on their appliances must undergo a rigorous assessment of energy efficiency from the EPA, including:
• Contribution of significant energy savings nationwide
• Uncompromised performance and features to meet consumer demand
• Extensive testing and data analysis on product performance and energy consumption

Certified appliances should be a factor for anyone purchasing a new refrigerator, washer, or dishwasher—but sometimes our budgets can block any foresight for the long run.
Energy Star appliances typically cost more than their less energy-efficient counterparts. A non-certified appliance could cost anywhere between $30 to $200 less than an Energy Star product—however, consumers oftentimes make up the difference in a matter of months by purchasing an appliance with the Energy Star seal.
Most modern-day appliances are designed to be energy-efficient—even when they don’t meet the standards set by the EPA. So, is it wise to make an immediate switch to an Energy Star product?
Economically, it may not be the best decision to run out to purchase all-new Energy Star appliances for a small reduction in your energy bill. But it’s something to think about when you do go to make those next big purchases.
